Passing on, up, milesbrings us to a new side-track station called Essex — which we pass; continuingalong the river, with its foaming currentnow on our left, first on one side, then onthe other, runs this beautiful stream untilwe lose sight of it altogether. The roadcrosses and re-crosses it on fine Howe trussbridges, running as straight as the courseof the mountains will permit. The moun-tains tower up on either hand, in placessloping and covered in places with timberfrom base to summit, in others precipitous,and covered with ifiasses of black, brokenrock. Tis a rough country, the canyon ofthe Truckee, possessing many grand andimposing features. On the road up we pass a new stationcalled Mystic—511 miles from Essex, andfour miles further Bronco — another side-track. Occa-sional strips of meadow land are seenclose to the rivers edge, but too small androcky to be of any use, only as grazingland. Now we cross the dividing line, andshout. as we enter California, a few miles east ofBoca—a small station miles fromBronco.
