The famous finger-thin Nuremberg Bratwurst (Nuremberg sausage) is accompanied by German bread, potato salad on a pewter plate and a half-litre glass of Bavarian beer served at Restaurant Bratwurstglocklein in the medieval village of the Handwerkerhof (Craftsmen's yard) in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany. From four to twelve sausages are served with either sauerkraut or potato salad served on a Church bell-shaped metal pewter plate in the shape of a Church bell called a Bratwurst bell that first appeared in the early 19th century. There are many legends surrounding the origins of the finger-size Nuremberg sausage. In medieval times, due to its small size, the sausage was passed through a prison door keyhole to feed the inmates in their cells or drilled holes in the cell walls. One such prison is the Lochgefangnisse (Holeprison) in Nuremberg. It is open to the public.
