Galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, Hubble and JWST images

Hubble Space Telescope (left) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST, right) images of the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, which lies billion light years from Earth. The JWST image is a full-colour infrared image that is the deepest, most detailed infrared image taken to date (July 2022). In the JWST image the galaxy cluster acts as a gravitational lens, allowing even more distant galaxies (red arcs) to be seen. The light from these galaxies has been travelling for over 13 billion years. JWST composite image obtained by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).
