. The Dental cosmos. , in the mandible also, twoparamolars alternating with normalmolars mav originate. THE DISTOMOLAR AXD ITS RELATIONSHIPTO THE POSTERIOR PARAMOLAR. My observations regarding the super-numerary elements occurring in themolar region in man would not be com-plete without a brief discussion of the we to distinguish between concrescenceof the distomolar with the third molar—for naturally only this molar can beinvolved—and concrescence of the pos-terior paramolar with the third molar? This query can be easily answered ifone remembers the above-mentioned factthat the distomolar, unless it be situatedin the prolongation of the dental arch, always exhibits a tendency to displace-ment lingually. (Cf. Fig. 6.) When-ever there is concrescence between thedistomolar and the third molar, I havealways observed that this takes placewith the disto-lingual cusp of the thirdmolar. In proof thereof, Fig. 18 showsa lower third molar from my collectionwith a distomolar tubercle, and Fig. 19 Fig. 1! Fig. distomolar. I presume that I have suc-ceeded in proving that the paramolarand the distomolar are not far they are related phylogenet-ically, is a question which we cannotdiscuss at length this time. A few words, however, should be said concerning theoccurrence of concrescence of the disto-molar with the third molar, for thisconcrescence occurs just like that of theanterior paramolar with the secondmolar, or that of the posterior paramolarwith the third molar. How, then, are an upper third molar with such a tu-bercle. The free distomolar shown inFig. 6 represents the transitional stageto the distomolar concresced with theupper third molar shown in Fig. it appears that it is not difficultto decide in a third molar whether wehave to deal with a concresced paramolaror a distomolar: the former concresceswith the mesio-buccal cusp, the latterwith the disto-lingual cusp. COXCLUSIOX. In the foregoing I trust to have fur-nished proof that the occurrenc
