'Bulgaria. Most of the Rila Monastery dates from the early nineteenth century, though S. Ivan Rilski, to whom it is dedicated, had his cell there a thousand years before. The community numbers about two hundred', c1920. The 10th century Rila Monastery is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, Bulgaria, and it is one of the most important Eastern Orthodox monasteries.
