Dissipating Thunderstorm glows at sunset. Dharawal State Conservation Area, Darkes Forest, NSW Australia
The aftermath of thunderheads and storms often provide the most spectacular cloud formations. Combined with early morning or afternoon light the results are often breathtaking formations of light and shadow. Here I was able to capture the illuminated anvil of the thunderhead breaking into a mammatus formation where these globulous formations appear to droop from the main base. Mammatus is often the sign of immense instability in the storm but if you can see it the storm is degenerating and the main part has usually passed by.
