Stone Age (Magdalenian) bullroarer. This device, here covered in carved lines, was swung through the air to make a roaring sound, and was thought to have been used in fertility rites. This specimen was found in the La Roche Cave at Lalinde, in the Dordogne region of France. It dates from the time of the Magdalenian culture, known for their carved bone, antler and ivory artefacts. The Magdalenian people, a culture of early modern humans, lived in western Europe from 15,000 to 7000 years ago, during the Upper Paleolithic period.
