The Master of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames presents a rose to the Lord Mayor in Mansion House, London, during the Knolly's Rose Ceremony. The ceremony, which dates back to 1381, sees a peppercorn rent of a single rose being paid annually to the Lord Mayor, after soldier Sir Robert Knollys of Seething Lane built an illegal footbridge over the road to his rose garden.
