Summer Showers Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819-1904). Summer Showers, ca. 1865-1870. Oil on canvas, frame: 21 1/8 x 34 1/4 x 3 in. ( x 87 x cm). Although Martin Johnson Heade’s depictions of marshy coastal wetlands offered little topographical drama, his small panoramic paintings of the salt-hay harvests from the 1860s to the 1880s adeptly captured fleeting effects of light and weather. Bluntly cropped at all four edges, these scenes lack a traditional dramatic focus, distinguishing them from the mainstream of landscape imagery at the time. American Art ca. 1865-1870
