An early advertisement (c1898 )for Barbour's linen threads and shoe threads showing a cartoon version of a man mending his son's trousers and giant reels of cotton. Barbour's of Lisburn was originally started by John Barbour (A Scotsman from Paisley) in 1785, who bought linen thread for manufacturing in Scotland. In 1999 it was acquired by Coats Viyella. Barbour's trademark was the Red Hand of Ulster
