The five-petalled rose emblem of the powerful Rožmberk or Rosenberg family, here painted blue, appears throughout the unique gilded and brightly coloured decorative cover over the well in the courtyard of the town’s castle. The wrought iron cover was created by a local blacksmith, Andreas, as a wedding gift for the 1598 marriage of the last Lord of Hradec, Joachim Ulrich von Neuhaus, to Marie of Hohenzollern. The colourful metalwork is also decorated with fantastical faces, mythical beasts and angels.
Jindřichův Hradec, South Bohemia, Czechia / Czech Republic: the five-petalled rose emblem of the powerful Rožmberk or Rosenberg family, here painted blue, appears throughout the unique gilded and brightly coloured decorative cover over the well in the courtyard of the town’s castle. The wrought iron cover was created by a local blacksmith, Andreas, as a wedding gift for the 1598 marriage of the last Lord of Hradec, Joachim Ulrich von Neuhaus, to Marie of Hohenzollern. The colourful metalwork is decorated with fantastical faces, mythical beasts and angels as well as the heraldic rose of the Rožmberks, lords of the Kingdom of Bohemia, who played an important role in Czech history for hundreds of years, from the 1200s until the early 17th century.
