The Egyptian Obelisk known as Cleopatras Needle in Manhattan Central Park New York City in black and white with copy space

The Obelisk, Central Park, New York City, in autumn, November 2010, in black and white. The monolithic 3,500-year-old Egyptian antiquity, carved from a single block of granite to honor Pharaoh Thutmose III, is the oldest outdoor monument in New York City. After it was found buried in the sand a millennium after it was carved, Cleopatra installed it in a temple to honor Julius Caesar, which is why some call the Obelisk Cleopatras Needle. A gift to the United States from the Egyptian government, it was erected in Central Park in New York in 1881.
