TJie burning of p/ FlG. 55.—After the phosphorus has burned in the corked test-tube, the test-tube is un- corked under water, and water enters to take the place of tlie air used up. Place a little phosphorus upon a slate, tile, or an old saucer. Apply a light to it. It catches on fire and burns brightly. As it burns, dense white clouds are formed. Volume of air used up ivhe7i phosphorus burns. —Place a little red (or yellow), phosphorus in a test-tube fitted with a good cork. Fix the stop- per firmly in the test-tube. Hold the test-tube slant- ingly, by means of a test- tube holder, over a flame for a minute or two, so as to heat the phosphorus and make it burn. When it will burn no longer, take away the test-tube and let it cool for five or ten Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Gregory, R.
