Body strongly compressed throughout; scales moderately large, finely ctenoid. Dorsal much shorter than anal, which is produced far forward and contains 27-30 rays. Pectorals inserted rather high up. Mpala. is 3 to 3§ times in length of head and 1| to 1^ times in interorbital width; prseorbital about ^ diameter of eye, covered with strongly ctenoid scales.
