View from above of a tank with two rays (Raja undulata) laid on the sandy bottom inside the Aquarium of Genoa, the largest in Europe, Liguria, Italy

The Aquarium of Genoa is located in the sixteenth century ancient port of the coastal city. The 2 hours and 30 minutes course includes 39 pools in addition to the 4 open-air pools of the Cetacean Pavilion. The total area of the Aquarium is 27,000 square meters. The tanks are home to about 15,000 animals of 400 different species including fish, marine mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates in environments that reproduce those originating from individual species with obvious educational purposes. The rays are cartilaginous skeleton fishes, like the sharks, with flattened shape and ample pectoral fins. They live in contact with the bottom, where they spend their time hidden under the sand. The mouth is in ventral position and is adapted to chop up preys with the hard shell, such as molluscs and crustaceans.
