(in type below image). William Cooke was born in Portsmouth, Va. on December 11,1823. After receiving a law degree in his home state, Cooke moved to St. Louis where he set up a private practice and by 1849 was a State Court Judge. He married Eliza von Phul, daughter of the famous St. Louisan Henry von Phul. In the early years of the Civil War, Cooke served as a Colonel and volunteer aide-de-camp and as a staff member of Governor Jackson. He was elected to be a delegate in the Confederate Provisional Congress from 1861-1862 and served as a Missouri Representative in the Confederate Congress from 1862-1863. Cooke died while in office on April 14, 1863 at Petersburg, Va. Although the original place of burial is unknown, he was reburied at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
