Smeaton's Tower. Historical diagrams relating to the design of the 18th-century third Eddystone lighthouse by British civil engineer John Smeaton (1724-1792). Smeaton made his name with this design for the Eddystone lighthouse near Plymouth, UK. Its construction was completed in 1759. The diagram at upper left shows the internal structure, the spiral staircase, and the housing for the lamp at the top of the lighthouse. The diagram at lower left shows a cross-section of the dovetail design used in the lower part of the tower. More dovetailing is shown at bottom right. This lighthouse was in use until 1877, when it was dismantled.
