Civita Di Bagnoregio

Civita di Bagnoregio in Italy is an example of a medieval city relatively untouched by modern life. Known as ‘Il paese che muore’ - the dying town , it sits on top of an outcrop of tuff or tufa limestone. Over the centuries erosion changed a once thriving settlement into an isolated citadel and now has only a handful of residents. It is accessible only by a remarkable foot-bridge. Believed to have been founded around 500BC,originally a Etruscan settlement and then falling under Roman rule and is the birthplace of Saint Bonaventure. Civita di Bagnoregio remains on the list of the 100 Most Endangered Sites.
