Solar panels. View of a bank of solar panels which are an integral element in the architectural design of an office building. Solar cells (photovoltaic cells) are used to convert solar energy into usable electrical energy. Solar power is a renewable energy source. It causes minimal pollution (associated with manufacture of the photovoltaic cells) and does not contribute to global warming. Most solar cells are made of a sandwich of doped silicon, which generates an electric current when sunlight falls on it. These are offices at Doxford Park in Sunderland, England. During the day, these solar cells are the sole source of power needed for the building.
