2009 flowering Euphorbia lathyris plant in Scotland
Euphorbia lathyris plant also known as wolf's milk plant - poisonous corrosive latex sap can cause permanent tissue damage to eyes or mucous membrane. Ornamental plant goes through several stages culminating in a large, bushy shrub up to 1 metre high on a single stem. Flowers are formed by leaf bracts. The plant is supposed to repel moles, and also attracts bees when flowering. Naturalises readily, seedlings will set at any time of year and the white latex sap is a natural antifreeze while also enabling the plant to survive very dry and hot conditions. Will grow on extremely poor ground.
