On the first Monday in January,1825, the term began. The schoolwas incorporated March 21, members of the first class weregraduated in 1826. The name of theschool was changed to that of theRensselaer Institute, by an act oflegislature, passed April 26, 1832. Theremoteness of the institute from thecentral part of Troy led to the re-moval of the school, in April, 1834, tothe Van der Heyden mansion, on tliesouthwest corner of Eighth and (JrandDivision streets. In 1843, the Infant -^i. 173 School lot and thebuildings on it, ap-praised at $6,500, were offered by thecity to the trustees of the institute asa gift should William P. Van Rens-selaer give them a sum of moneyequal to the value of the last patroon of Rensselaerswyckhaving complied with the terms, theinstitute was moved, in 1S44, to theInfant School Building on the lot, onthe northeast corner of State andSixth streets. On April 8, 1S61, anact was passed by the legislaturechanging the name of the RensselaerInstitute and incorporating the Rens-selaer Polytechnic Institute. In thegreat conflagration of Saturday, May10, 1862, the institute-building, con-taining valuable apparatus, cabinets,and records, was burned. On thefollowing Wednesday, the course of in-struction was continued to the closeof the term in the Troy University,now the Provincial TheologicalSeminary.
