The shank of thefork has a certain amount of spring, which relieves the friction and pulleys from the shockor jar of the ram when reversing its motion. The cross-feed is given to the table by the screwratchet and rod which is secured to the lower part of the disk, which disk is compressedbetween leather disks. The friction of the leather causes the feed-disk to move with thewheel until stopped by the fixed pin on the rear bracket, or by the adjustable threadedstop pin on the forward bracket. The table is secured to the cross-head in the usual manner, 798 SHINGLE-MAKING MACHINERY. the top plate is hinged at the rear end of the open table, and is raised by the screwwn, and is clamped when in position by screws passing through slots in the drop pieces.
