T4 bacteriophage cell-puncturing device, molecular model. A bacteriophage, or phage, is a virus that infects bacteria. To infect a cell, the phage attaches to the cell wall and uses enzymes to create a channel through the cell membrane. The phage's DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is then injected through this channel into the cell's cytoplasm. Once in the cell, the DNA uses the host's machinery to replicate itself many times and then assemble new phages.
