Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) genome map, computer artwork. This map was created by rendering all the DNA strands that make up the plant's genome into a planet-like sphere. Gene density is coloured green for high density and blue for low density. Orange, at the top, is mitochondrial DNA and the dark band across the equator represents autonomous genes. These are genes that can multiply and insert themselves at various places within the genome. This map is one of a series of genomic planets created by German biologist Thomas Fester.
