Archaic pictographs in Sego Canyon, Utah, USA, roughly dated to 700 - 1200 AD. The style is called 'Barrier Canyon' after a rock art site along Barrier Creek, in the Horseshoe Canyon section of Canyonlands National Park, USA. Barrier Canyon style is typified by painted figures of larger than life size human-like forms (anthropomorphic). These ghost-like figures frequently have hollowed or missing eyes, horns or antennae, and missing arms and legs. They are often painted red and have decorations on the body. Barrier Canyon style rock art is found on the canyon walls of the northern Colorado Plateau in southeastern Utah, west Colorado and northern Arizona. Native American groups ascribe religious functions to some of the rock art panels and consider them to be sacred sites and may be interpreted as depictions of migration routes, fertility, hunting magic, ceremonies and cosmic events.
