Cabrach Moor Grampian Region

The Cabrach close to Dufftown often referred to as the whisky capital of the world. Located in an elevated situation in the uplands of Grampian Region in North East Scotland the area enjoys the extremes of weather, quite often very hot in the summer months whilst bitterly cold during the winter time. Snow is not uncommon during these darker days and nights, sometimes closing the roads for several days at a time. The Cabrach is comprised of two parts - the Upper Cabrach and the Lower Cabrach. In the Lower Cabrach lies the village of Dufftown with its famous distillery. Dufftown holds several annual festivals throughout the year and with its numerous distilleries and various other nearby attractions it has something to offer every visitor. Farming Crofting and some forestry along with whiskey production help boost the local economy. Geomorphological features are interesting The gabbro tors of the Cabrach are almost unique in their basin rim and low-lying setting. Deep grussification is common in this area (Basham, 1974). The numerous glacially-transported corestones that litter the Insch basic igneous mass indicate that tors were widespread there prior to glaciation.
