Bursitis of the knee. Swollen knee of a 59-year- old man with infrapatellar bursitis. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions and lubricates areas where tissues, such as muscles and tendons, move over bone. There are many bursa in the body; the infrapatellar bursa is beneath the patella (kneecap). Bursitis is caused by repetitive movement, trauma or prolonged and excessive pressure on the bursa, for example kneeling. Inflammation makes normal movement painful. Treatment is with rest and anti- inflammatory drugs. In severe cases the bursa may need to be drained.
