Silk worms (Bombys mori) in Hida folk village and open-air museum, Takayama, Japan. Silk worms were domesticated around 5, 000 years ago. They construct cocoons using raw silk that they produce from their salivary glands. Silk yield varies with silk worm variety, but it can take around 3, 000 cocoons to make 250 grams of silk thread.
