Lungs and heart. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan through the chest of a 66 year old woman, showing her healthy heart and lungs. The ribcage surrounds internal body organs. The heart is seen (at centre, red) inside the ribcage. Chambers of the heart and blood vessels associated with it make it appear variously shaped. The lungs (dark) lie on either side of the heart. At lower centre is a vertebra of the spine protruding from the ribcage wall to the heart; to its right is the circular aortic artery (red). A CT scan is made by X-ray beams emitted in a circle around the subject to produce \slice\" images through the body."
