The Bones of the nose are, the nasal, and nasal processes of thesuperior maxillary. 4. The Fibro-cartilages give form and stability to the outwork ofthe nose, providing, at the same time, by their elasticity, againstinjuries. They are five in number, namely, the— Rbro-cartilage of the septum,Two lateral fibro-cartilages,Two alar fibro-cartilages. The Tibro-cartiJage of the septum, somewhat triangular in form, divides the nose into its two nostrils. It is connected above with thenasal bones and lateral fibro-cartilages; behind, with the ethmoidalseptum and vomer; and below, with the palate processes of thesuperior maxillary bones. The alar fibro-cartilages and columnamove freely upon the fibro-cartilage of the septum, being but looselyconnected with it by perichondrium. The Lateral fibro-cartilages are also triangular; they are con-nected, in front, with the fibro-cartilage of the septum; above, with the nasal bones Fig. 161.*. with the nasal processes of the superior max-illary bones; and below, with the alarfibro-cartilages. Alar fibro-cartilages.—Each of thesecartilages is curved in such a manneras to correspond with the walls of thenostril, to which it forms a kind of inner portion is loosely connectedwith the same part of the opposite car-tilage, so as to form the cohimna. Itis expanded and thickened at the pointof the nose to constitute the lobe; andon the side makes a curve correspondingwith that of the ala. This curve isprolonged downwards and forwards inthe direction of the posterior border ofthe ala by three or four small fibro-cartilaginous plates (sesamoid cartilages, cartilagines minores), which are ap-pendages of the alar fibro-cartilage. The whole of these fibro-cartilagesare connected with each other and to * The fibro-cartilages of tbe nose. 1. One of the nasal bones. 2. Thecartilage of the septum. 3. The lateral cartilage. 4.
