Exonumia - Both sides of a Middlesex trade token of 1795 with an anti-slavery theme. One side says 'Am I not a man and a brother'; the other 'May St Avery & oppression cease throughout the World'. Sometimes known as a barter tokens, they were issued by private traders when there was a local shortage of money to increase trade or support a buying and selling of slaves was made illegal across the British Empire in 1807, but slaves could be owned until 1833.
