The layers of red sandstone of part of the Schnebly Hill Formation, a thick layer of red to orange-colored sandstone found only in the Sedona vicinity are clear in this image of Steamboat Rock, rising above Oak Creek Canyon, Arizona. The orange and red sandstone was deposited about 300 million years ago during the Permian period. The 27 mile Route 89A between Flagstaff and Sedona is the second most visited tourist attraction in Arizona, and at weekends it is also popular with locals. Protected by the escarpment of the Mogollon Rim, the area has a more temperate climate than much of the rest of northern Arizona.
