Beacon Island was known as Batavia's graveyard by survivors of the Batavia shipwreck (Note: this photograph was taken in 2012 before rehabilitation of the island). On June 4, 1629 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship Batavia struck Morning reef in the Wallabi Group of the Houtman Abrolhos before dawn. Survivors made it to nearby islands, but a subsequent mutiny led to the mass murder of approximately 125 men, women and children. The Houtman Abrolhos islands lie 60 kilometres off the coast of Geraldton in Western Australia. There are 122 pristine islands in three major groups; the Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert groups stretching from north to south across 100 kilometres of the Indian Ocean.
