Polyotia.—This term is applied to a congenital deformityin which, in addition to microtia, certain supernumerary growths are met with inthe immediate vicinity ofthe ear, but entirely distinctfrom the deformed they occurwith a perfectly normal au-ricle, the fact that they arenot attached to it distin-guishing them from the au-ricular appendages alreadydescribed. The conditionis sometimes associated withcongenital aural fistula, asin the case reported The deformitymay be bilateral or unilat-eral, and the supplementaryorgan may present a variety of shapes, the most commonbeing that of a small wartlike excrescence situated upon thecheek in front of the external meatus. The condition usually occurs in con-nection with microtia. An instance of this kind, observed byme, is depicted in Fig. 69. The auricle upon the affected sidewas represented by a cutaneous fold, beneath which there wasa cartilaginous framework. This was bent forward upon thecheek, covering the normal site of the meatus. Upon the pos-terior surface there was a well-defined groove between thecartilaginous and noncartilaginous portion. About threefourths of an inch in front of the anterior margin of this de-formed auricle was a small, wartlike prominence representinga second and rudimentary pinna, it being situated toofarante-riorl}^ t
