Compartment syndrome fasciotomy treatment. Patient in a hospital intensive care unit (ICU) recovering from bilateral fasciotomy operations to treat compartment syndrome in his lower legs. Both legs have black, necrotic muscle. The patient is on a ventilator to support his breathing. Fasciotomy is the removal of connective tissue around muscles, usually to relieve pressure and treat loss of blood circulation. Compartment syndrome is a life-threatening condition where an injury can cause increased pressure within one of the body's compartments such as an arm or leg. If untreated, the lack of blood supply damages the affected muscles and nerves.
