Andrea Cesalpino, also known as Caesalpinus, (1519-1603) was an Italian botanist, physician and physiologist. He was the Professor of Medicine and Director of the Botanic Garden at Pisa University. His botanical experiments laid the foundations of plant physiology. In his “De Plantisâ€Â\x9D of 1583, he was the first to attempt the scientific classification of plants thus foreshadowing Linnaeus who called him the father of botany. Considered to be the most philosophical and original plant physiologist since Theophrastus (300 BCE).
