Asian hornet research. Cross-section through a nest of the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina. From left to right: emerging adult, nymph, and two late-instar larvae. This hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004, and has been spreading, preying on native honeybee species. Studies of this hornet and its effects are being carried out by a joint research unit (UMR) on biodiversity called 'Origine, Structure et Evolution de la Biodiversite' (OSEB). Photographed in 2010, at the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHM) in Paris, France.
