One of those contributions to history the value ofwhich is recognized only by the few who are constantlydelving lor fresh material in the record of their coun-trys beginnings lias been made by Mr. Burton \1\ aKonkle in the form of a, volume entitled The Life and Times of Thomas Smith, 1746-1809 (Philadelphia:. MR. THOMAS C. DAWSON. Campion & Co.). This Thomas Smith, whose name hasalmost faded from the pages of American history, wasa Pennsylvania member of the Continental Congress,and his relations with the important men of the Revo-lutionary period, both in State and nation, make hisbiography important even at this day. The work seemsto have been done with great care and thoroughness,and is vouched for by Attorney-General Carson, ofPennsylvania. The second part Of Mr. Thomas C. Dawsons SouthAmerican Republics, in The Stories of the NationsSeries (Putnams),deals with the repub-lics of Peru, Chile, Bo-livia, Ecuador, Vene-zuela, Colombia, andPanama. The methodof treatment adoptedby Mr. Dawson is some-what cumbersome,since it involves a repe-tition of certain topicswhich were common tothe history of all theSouth American repub-lics prior to the wars ofliberation, in the earlypart of the nineteenthcentury.
