Kylesku Bridge Sutherland Scottish Highlands UK

Designed to complement the natural beauty of its site the Kylesku Bridge spans 132 metres across a firth on the north west coast of Scotland. Arup was responsible for the conceptual design followed by detailed design and supervision. It replaced the existing ferry used to cross the firth, eliminating the 130km detour necessary at times when the ferry service was not operating, improving contact within the scattered community, and helping to develop the tourist potential of the region. In all preliminary road schemes, great care was taken in fitting the highway element to the topography, to ensure the new works would not adversely affect the beauty of the landscape. The deck is curved in plan with a minimum radius of 140 metres and navigation clearance is 24 metres, built in concrete to reduce maintenance requirements in this remote area. Kylesku Bridge has and has won the Annual Award of the Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland 1988, a Civic Trust Award 1986, the Concrete Society Award 1985, and the Saltire Award 1984.
