The students also assess them-selves a penny a week with which to purchase music for theVictrola and other purposes. LITERARY SOCIETIES. In the early history of the school two literary societieswere organized, which have had a great influence in thegrowth and development of the school. The Lyceum Society — 22 —. was organized in 1872, and the Mozart Society in 1874. Sincethat time these societies have been active and have exerteda positive, constructive influence upon the lives of many Nor-mal School students. Any student of the Normal School is eligible to member-ship in these societies. They meet regularly each Fridayevening. The programs are varied in character, and thus meetthe varying abilities of the different students. Vocal and in-strumental music, declamations, readings, orations, and de-bates, are given with sufficient frequency to enable the stu-dents to get practice and the growth and confidence thatcomes from practice. There is a good healthy rivalry between the two societies, which without doubt is an important factor in their activityand vigor. During the commencement season, the annual con-test between the two societies is held. This is regarded as thegreatest school event of the year, one which fills the spaciousauditorium full to overflowing. ATHLETICS. Athletics
