While it v/as present in several fields in of these states, it was not found in amounts sufficient to te of economic importance. Scab, caused by C-ibberella saubinetii (Mont.) Sacc, was observed in Illinois, V.'i scon sin, Iowa, Minnesota. In Minnesota the disease was fairly widespread, but did not cause any appreciable damage. The head blight is fairly common on barley, but it very seldom reduces the yield. OATS i Pig. 54- Distribution of oats in the United States. (Map prepared in the Office of Farm Maniigement.) It is quite evident that the two smuts of oats, v/hich are not separated in the survey, still do a great deal of damage in spite of extension campaigns for seed treatment. The map, Fig. 55» shows the distribution and percentage of reduction in yield due to oat smuts. The greatest losses apparently occurred in Texas and Arkansas. In both of these states it is estinated that the yield v;as reduced by 10 or more on account of smut. In Kentucky the yield, according to Valleau, was ieduced by 8. According to Ludwig, 'J is estimated as the reduction in yield for South Carolina; G in Oklahoma according to Stratton; and
