They must be protected from the sun and wind until they are planted; and moreover, only as many should be taken to the orchard at a time as can be protected while the work is going on. It is impossible to remove a tree from the nursery row or from the ground elsewhere without cutting away a part of the roots. The top must be cut back then, to offset this loss of roots. It may be given almost as a fixed rule that young trees should be cut back at least one half of the last season's growth and vines and shrubs should be cut back.
