Red fruits of a grabapple named "John Downie" (Malus pumila) ripe on the branches after a rain in summer, Bavaria, Germany

Cornelian cherry is a large shrub or tree widely distributed in southern Europe and parts of central Europe. Everything from the cornelian cherry tree was used: Flowers, leaves, bark, but especially the wood and fruit. The cherries are eaten either raw or candied, or made into compote with sugar or vinegar. They can also be used to make jams, jellies and fruit juices.
