Propyl methanoate, molecular model. The molecular formula of this organic chemical is The atoms (spheres) are colour-coded: carbon (black), hydrogen (white) and oxygen (red). The atoms are joined by chemical bonds, with a carbon-oxygen (carbonyl) double bond at upper right, and an adjacent carbon-oxygen (ether) single bond. This combination is known as an ester. Also known as propyl formate, this chemical is used as a flavouring and perfume, and also as a solvent.
