Giant Sand sculptures highlight the Save the Turtles campaign on Puri beach ,Orissa,India

More than 50,000 Olive Ridley sea turtles arrive on two islands off the Orissa coast for their annual mass nesting The turtles come to Nasi-1 and Nasi-2 islands in Gahiramatha - one of the world's largest sea turtle rookery - in the coastal district of Kendrapada, 175 km from Bhubaneswar They nest on both the islands at about 10 night about 350,000 turtles lay eggs on the sandy beaches Apart from Gahirmatha, the turtles lay eggs on the Rusikulya river beach in Ganjam district and the Devi river mouth in Puri district. The biggest threats to the turtles are the mechanised fishing trawlers in whose nets the endangered animals get entangled. Most of these boats dont use the mandatory turtle excluder devices. Packs of dogs also feast on the eggs and there is a move to sterelise these to control their numbers. With the nesting season begun, wildlife enthusiasts, conservation groups, turtle activists and India's Coast Guard have beefed up security at the sites to tackle poachers and monitor the trawlers. There is a tradition and a school of Sand Sculptures ( sometimes controversial) on Puri Beach in Orissa India where The Save the Turtle movement was backed by the artists and local schoolchildren and TV
