After this he was appointed hilloric- grapherof France, and laudably employed many years in re- fear'ches into the records of his country. Hence he pubhfhed 'â Memoirs of the Gauls," 1619, 4to., which, on account of the f :ts contained in them, were highly cfteemed. It might alio be regarded as the firll part of his " Hiftory of France," which is brought down to the year l J-lj. The laft two reigns were revifed by cardinal Richlieu, which will account for the adulation paid to that minifter. He intended to have rewritten a part of the work after the death of the cardinal, but did not live to effect, it. He was author of a " Roman Hiltory," and a " Courfe of Phi- lofophy," and other pieces of no great note. In the of life he compofed a work on the liberties of the Gallican church, which he prefented in MS. to the chancellor Seguier, rtquefting permimon to print it, but the chancellor unfeel- ingly threw it in the fire befcre his face.
