A professional stonecutter hammers a chisel along a straight line in a block of granite to separate a slab of the stone at a quarry in Riveo, a town in the Maggia Valley of Ticino, the Italian region of Switzerland. To cut stone slabs, the stonemason uses chisels with wide flat blades to tap along the cut line to produce a groove, then the chisels in that groove are hit harder to crack open the block of granite. This traditional method of stonecutting has been replaced by electric saws in many quarries.
