Plant pest resistance research. Virologist inoculating a potato plant leaf with potato virus Y (PVY). The leaf had previously been treated with a systemic acquired resistance (SAR) activator. PVY can cause a number of problems in potato production. The most basic being loss of yield. However, it can lead to potato tuber necrotic ringspot disease (PTNRD). This makes all potatoes that have been produced unusable. PVY is transmissible by aphids but may also remain dormant in seed potatoes. SAR activators are used to activate a plant's resistance to pathogens such as PVY.
