Production of vocal sounds. 17th-century diagrams of the anatomy of the human throat, showing how vocal sounds are produced. Each of the smaller 34 diagrams shows the vocalisation of a particular letter or sound. The larger diagram (lower right) is labelled with the epiglottis, the larynx, the trachea ('aspera arteria'), and the oesophagus. These diagrams are from 'An Essay towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language' (1668) by English clergyman and natural philosopher John Wilkins (1614-1672). In this book, Wilkins attempted to establish a universal language.
