He was promoted to a Major Scholarship in 1896 and went on to be placed in the First Class in both Part I (1896) and Part II (1898) of the Mechanical Sciences Tripos. In the Part II examinations he was awarded a distinction in Electricity and Magnetism. As a result of his studies he was awarded the degree of Batchelor of Arts in 1896 and Master of Arts in 1900. Also in 1900 he made application for a patent for an advertising â ^^-^.
